Abstract
Tn 1972, for the nine months Period beginning front Marrh to November consus were made, twice, on status of experimental animals of year 1971, used at 338 places such as colleges, research and experiment institutions or stations, pharmaceutical companies, hospitals and others and others which might have been used experimental animals (Seout; 194, Kyung Gyi: 16, Choong Nam: 9, Choong Buk: 7, Gang Won: 8, Jeon Nam: 23, Jeon Buk: 9, Kyung Nam: 9, Kyung Bukt: 22, Je Ju:8, Busan:23).
First census was condueted at 338 places mentioned above to find out whether or not such places have been used or fed any experimental animal by sending questionares. It was found by this questionares that only 109 places have been used or fed the experimental animal.
Second census was thus subjected to the 109 Places (Seoul:62, Kyung Gyi;7, Choong Nam;6, Choong Buk:2, Gang Won;5, Jeon Nam;3, Jeon Buk;2, Kyung Nam;4, Kyung Buk;6, Je Ju;4, Busan;8) by actual observatlon to find out the kind (including strain) and sex of the experimental animals, institutions of experirnental animals used, odjectives, used period, source, age, and number of animals used according to body weight size. To Which the experimental animals were being fea, observations included were also the objectives of feeding, systems of ventilation, heating, illumination and watering, size of feeding spaces, kind of feed, and number of feeding per day and bedding changes, kind of sanitary products, and number of sanitation conducted.
Results of investigations conducted were summarized as follows;
1. Experimental animals used at the 109 places were 52 kinds; mouse, rat, guinea pig, hamster, rabbit, cattles of Korean, dairy and beef types, horse, swine, sheep, goat, dog, cat, domestic fowl, duck, goose, turkey, bat pheasant, peacock, vulture, kestel, back-kwan, butler, pieriesrapal, frog, honey-bee, earthworm, topshell, carb, turtle, terrapin clam, goldfish, shrimp, mudfish, salmon, carp, grassfish, trout, brugil, guppy, headgehog, cuttle-fish, drosophila, anguila jap, star-fish, heljocidaris, crassispina, oayster and jachup.
Total number of the experimental animals investigated were 1,220,931 excluding the number of anguilla jap, starfish, heljocidaris and oayster which couldn¢¥t be counted. Among these, number of mouse were 1,038,017 which accounted for 89.9378% of the total and there are absolutly predominant in number above all others, Next. butler were 43,000(3.4419%), domestic fowl 18,221 (1.4932%), rat 15,933 (1.3050), and rabbit 12,008(O.9835) respectively.
In view of sex, number of male were 61,843(5,0652%) and number of female 53,978(4.339%), and number of animals used without distinction of sex were 1,106,110(90.5957% of all) out of total 1,220,931 animals.
2. train of experimental animals investigated included total 36 strain among the 12 different animals, as mouse had 9 strains, rat 5, rabbit 2, bee-cattle 2, swine 4, domestic fowl 7, Korean-cattle 2, and one each for dairy-cattle, puinea-pig, hamster.goat, and, duck as these were shown in table 3.

3. In institution wise, 109 places had used total 1,220,931 number of experimental animals, pharmaceutical companies were the tops in all for the most number of animals used, which were 924,945 animals, 75.75% of total. Next most number user were the research and experimental stations with 161,629 number of animals (13.24%), and the colleges and were merely 0.07% of all. Those places other than above had used 46,465 number of animals(3.81%).
4. In objeetive-wise, 824,765 anmals out of total 1,220,931 were used for the production purpose which accounted for 67.55% of all. Nert, 299,224 animals (24.51%) were used for the research and experimental purpose, 96,635 animals(7.91%) for the testing, and 307 animals (0.03%) for the propose other than mentioned above.
5. In view of sourec and origin of experimental animals used. 926,377 animals, 926,377 of total, were purchased from other places whereas self production accounted for only 14.69% of total, 199,402 animals. Acquired through other channels accounted for 9.43%, 115,152 animals. Especially the mouse, rat and rabbit were mainly depended on purchasing for the supply whereas the guinea pig and hamster were furnished mainly by self-production.
6. Details on various instituions of experimental animals used odjectives of using periods of used, sources and origins, ages and body weights were summized in appendix-¥°, table 1-22.
In general categories of mammalians, relatively statisfactory conditions were met for the investigation but in fish, insects and others involving 31 species, there wasn¢¥t good investigatable condition prevailed; especially for the honeybee, adult fowl and others involving 6 species even the number of aimals, used periods, sources and origin, ages and body weights couldn¢¥t be known.
7. In number of experimental animals feeding at various institutions, it was found that 35 species involving 995,779 animals were being fed at 69 places; 153,110 animals(15.3759%) at the colleges and universities, 241,350 animals, (24.2484%) at the research and experimental stations, 34,329 animals (3.4475%) at the pharmaceutical companies, only 100 animals (0.001%) at the hospital, least of all. Prevalent 566,880 animals (59.9281%) were being fed at the place other than mentioned above.
Like-wise in kinds of animals, most various kinds of animals were being fed at the colleges, and research and experimental stations. At the pharmaceuticl companies, hospitals and others, mouse, rat, guinea-pig, and rabbit were mostly concentrated on. Number of mouse were 758,792, about 85% of all. Among these, 550,630 mice 72.49% of total mice were being fed at the other places.
8. In feeding onjective-wise for the experimental animals, 580,779 animals, 58.33% of total, were being fed for the purpose of selling, 246,445 animals (23.75%) for the self testing. Fro the breeding purpose, 67,459 animals (6.77%) were being dept, and 8,270 animals (0.83%) for other purposes.
9. Kinds of experimental animals fed were including mouse, rat, guinea pig, hamster, rabbit, Korean-cattle, dairy cattle, horse, swine, sheep, goat, dog, domestic fowl, duck, goose, turkey, pheasant, and jabo (25 species) which total 995,770 number of animals. For the 9 species including hobeybee, salmon, carp, grass fish, tout, brugil, clam, topshell, and ear-shell, number involved and sex were not known but it was thought they being fed the experimental purpose.
In sex-wise, 219,653 animals (22.06%) were males, 275,400 animals (27.66%) females, and 500,726 animals (50.28%) sex unknown.
10. Foro the strain of the experimental animals being fed, 12 species of animals were with known strain.
Number of strain involved were total 49 strains; mouse with 16 strains, rat 5 strains, hamster 2 strains, rabbit 2 strains, dairy cattle 2 strains, swine 3 strains, goat 2 strains, domestic fowl 4 strains, drosophila 10 strains, and guinea pig, Koran cattle and sheep 1 strains each.
Like-wise, total number involved in 12 species pocessing strains were 915,475 animals. Among these, only 196,187 animals (32.54%) were with known strain with unknown.
11. Results of investigations made on feeding conditions accroding to the animal species, such as institutions, feeding objectives, systems of ventilation, heating, watering and illumination, size of feeding spaces, feeds and number of feeding per day, number of bedding changes, sanitary products and number of sanitation conducted were as shown in appendix-¥±, table-31.
Only few institution had relatively good feeding methods provided by improved of the places had not met the proper facillities and their feeding methods were also poor.
Rather large animals, insects and fish types of animal species were relatively in good shapes.
